MicroRNAs (miRNA) are one of the promising biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of the onset of disease states, providing an attractive pathway in gene therapy for genetic disorders and potential drug targets. However, the detection of miRNAs remains great challenges due to the characteristics of miRNA including small size, low abundance and sequence similarity among family members. The increasing demand of clinical biomedicine and fast development of nanobiotechnology have substantially promoted the generation of a variety of organic/inorganic nanosystems for bioanalysis and biomedical applications. The recent process of our group in nanomaterials-based DNA biosensor and miRNA bioanalysis will be presented. By employing top-down or bottom-up methods, we fabricated a series of nanomaterials, which were further modified to impart new properties to develop novel electrochemical and optical methods for in vitro miRNA bioanalysis and design multi-functional nanoprobes for gene delivery, cell imaging, and intracellular miRNA detection.

Dr. Haifeng Dong

Dr. Haifeng Dong received his Ph.D. degree from Nanjing University in 2011. He then joined the University of Science & Technology Beijing (USTB) in the same year. He pursued his research as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pittsburgh from 2012.10 to 2013.9. Afterwards, he joined USTB as a Professor. He works as a visiting professor of Kyoto University from 2015.7 to 2015.9. His research interests include the application of functional nanoprobes in DNA biosensors and imaging analysis of intracellular microRNA as well as advanced fuel cell catalyst. These achievements have led to two books and 26 SCI papers published in Chem. Rev., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Funct. Mater., Biomaterials,Small and Anal. Chem. etc. These papers have been cited over 1000 times and the most cited paper has been cited 323 times. He has been recognized with Jiangsu province Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2012 and National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation Award Nomination in 2013. He was also awarded the first class Natural Science Prize by Ministry of Education of China in 2013 and the first class Scientific and Technological Prize by Chinese Association for Instrumental Analysis in 2014.
